Recently, 12 United Church members from across the country gathered to reflect on the past, present, and future of the church. From deep connection and bold conversation came a vision of inclusion and community.

Launching April 17, 2025, we are excited to introduce a significant project that highlights a church rooted in justice and equality, with a vision of Deep Spirituality, Bold Discipleship, and Daring Justice. This project aims to raise awareness during the Centennial year among new audiences about who the United Church is today and who it dreams of being.

A Place at the Table

This photography project, inspired by The Last Supper, represents many diverse identities within the United Church. It can be described as an invitation—a welcoming piece that showcases the diversity of the church and encourages people to explore what the United Church is about.

The vision for this project is deeply rooted in authentic representation, active collaboration, and bold reflection. Our photographer, Rev. Alan Lai, an ordained minister and former theological educator, approaches his art with a profound sense of purpose. When invited to capture a photograph inspired by The Last Supper, he saw it as more than just creating a beautiful image but as a chance to embrace the church’s ongoing journey.

We gathered in a retreat to build relationships and prepare the disciples for what might come. The photograph was ultimately a collaborative process, drawing on diverse cultural, ethnic, and theological perspectives to reflect the church’s modern identity.

The photograph itself will be unveiled on Maundy Thursday at Metropolitan United Church to the Toronto media. General Secretary Rev. Michael Blair will address the media, and several disciples will be on hand for interviews. Eventually, the 12 ft. x 6 ft. stretched canvas image will find its home at our new office location at 300 Bloor St. In addition to the artwork, the image has been reproduced on our website with annotations, video clips, and biographies of the participants. Multiple stories will be shared over the coming months as we engage with new audiences and build relationships.

Alan’s photograph serves not only as an artistic expression but as a spiritual celebration—a reminder of Christ’s role as a community builder, servant, and connector in a world that continues to evolve.

We hope this project sparks curiosity and reminds us of the power of community and transformation. Welcome to The United Church of Canada—this space is yours to explore and belong.

The Significance of the Last Supper

The Last Supper, as told in scripture, found Jesus gathered at the table with his friends. It would be their final meal shared together before Jesus was betrayed, arrested, crucified, hung on a cross to die, buried, and rose again on the third day in resurrection. These events are recorded in the gospel accounts in the Bible.

At the Last Supper, the disciples were gathered in an upper room, observing Passover with Jesus. After washing the disciples' feet, Jesus shared bread and wine, inviting them to do this in remembrance of him.

Our faith in Jesus Christ, seekers, and believers in the love of God unites us all.

Jesus invited fishermen and tax collectors, those who doubted and those who betrayed. We gather at this table, not because God commands us but because God invites us. In this meal, God connects us as kin in Christ. All are welcome, valued, needed here. Come! You have a place at the table.

This video invites you to witness the profound moments of connection and community as we come together to break bread, share stories, and embrace our neighbors. Through deep faith and a sense of belonging, we explore the fullness of humanity and the divine reflected in each person. Join us in this journey of vulnerability, curiosity, and authentic self-expression, as we celebrate inclusivity, diversity, and the joy of relationships formed in challenging times.
