Cathie Savage provided the message at our worship service on May 18 th . Referring to
the four scripture readings in the lectionary for this Sunday, Cathie reminded us that we
should keep praising God in all that we do and keep doing it in new ways.
As a congregation, while we all know that change has to happen, we often fall back to
what is comfortable for us but that is not always what we are called to do.
Cathie told how her friend Jean was uncomfortable when they rode with Cathie’s father
as he always took a new way home, never wanting to drive the same route twice. Jean
learned to trust that Cathie’s father would get them home. This reminds us that we
need the security of knowing where we are now and where we are going but we also
need the spontaneity and adventure in our lives; we need to be open and live into the
unknown future. We need to trust in God when he says “See I make all things new”.
At First United we are like Peter; we know we need to change. We know we want to
continue to be a thriving church but we don’t know what we will look like in the future.
So we need to step boldly and with faith, knowing that with every change there is both
grief for what we are losing and joy for the new things coming our way.
God has a vision for the future. We need to have faith and live into it. We can do that if
we love one another.
