Friday, July 31st

Greetings to our First United community from a different voice this Friday.

When we were first alerted about the COVID-19 epidemic in March, Bailey’s was able to continue their business in Hilliard Hall because they are considered an essential service. Bailey’s has rented space from First United for many years now and works with over 90 growers and producers to provide locally grown and produced foods all year long.

Mary Rose and her crew already followed strict procedures for food handling and began to perform additional sanitizing of surfaces and appliances. Customers can no longer gather their own produce but order online and their order is passed to them at a safe distance. Business has been very good.

During the spring, when our somewhat elderly refrigerator in the kitchen began to fail, Mary Rose offered to buy a new refrigerator as a gift to the church because she was so grateful to First United for our support. The new fridge arrived in July.

On another topic, keeping in touch by email has turned out to be more important for our congregation than we might ever have guessed 5 months ago. Shortly after First’s Friday letter was started and became a weekly contact, we realized that there are people in the congregation who don’t have email or access to a computer. We have been sending a condensed version of those Friday emails every month or so to about 25 homes. The 3rd mailing went out on July 27.

Take care,

Mary Joan Brooker

A note of appreciation to Cathie and Mike Savage for sharing their quotes to help cope with life.

Mike - “Only dead fish go with the flow.”  “If you’re coasting, you’re going downhill.”  “You have to stir the pot. Otherwise the soup burns and you have to throw it out.”  “The ultimate goal of it all is to bring the kingdom of heaven to earth.”

Cathie - “Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into instant flame by an encounter with another human being.  Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light.”  -  Dr. Albert Schweitzer

Praying with Scripture
Here’s an invitation to check out Psalm 19, one of the Bible passages from Praying with Scripture this week.  It opens with “God’s glory is on tour in the skies"  from The Message -The Bible in Contemporary English.  It brought our thoughts to glorious sunrises and sunsets we have been fortunate to experience.

If you’d like to join us - Tues. and Thurs. at 9am on Zoom, we’d love to see you!
